Book Review: Dance in the End Zone

My SBM Mastermind group just finished reading this book, and I had forgotten how well it helps small business owners start thinking about an exit. I wrote this book review in February 2009.)

Remember how much time and thought went into starting your business? For most small business owners, it takes at least six months and sometimes several years to figure out how to start a business. Hundreds of hours of planning to make sure the start of the business is wildly successful.

How much time have you spent planning the exit of your business? In most cases, the answer is very little. This is the subject of author and exit strategy guru Patrick Ungashick’s new book “Dance in the End Zone”. Ungashick has spent his career helping business owners exit their businesses. His book is based on a comprehensive survey of hundreds of business owners, measuring their readiness for business exit. The results of his study are very interesting and surprising. Bottom line? Most small business owners are inadequately prepared to exit their business and are often unaware of the key questions they need to ask to initiate the exit process.

In the book, Ungashick shares the Seven Essential End Zone Questions, over fifty exit tools and tactics, and several excellent case studies involving small business owners like you. What I like best about the book is that it dispels the myth that exit planning is something we do when we are ready to exit the business. Instead, the book makes a strong case for starting the exit planning process today. It is never too early to begin planning the transition of your business, whether it involves a sale, merger, or passing it along to a family member.

My experience has been that there are very few books on the topic of exit strategy. Dance in the End Zone is a very good one.

I recommend you read it as soon as possible.
