Mary did it, and became one of the youngest (and only African-American woman) manufacturing supervisors. If that weren’t enough, her next challenge was to break into the security business, where minorities made up 90 percent of the workforce but practically none of the managers. Thirty years later she owns her own company and employs nearly 200 people. Her book is entitled, appropriately enough, “The Chick in Charge.”
